Gideon Mendelson takes a different approach than most when it comes to coastal home decor. Having grown up in Westchester County, NY, he visited the Hamptons every summer during his childhood.
In an interview with Hamptons Cottages & Gardens, Mendelson says that he originally had a different view of the Hamptons. “All I saw was what the media told us about the affectation and phoniness,” he says. “But my father really loved it here, and he and my mother rented homes in a variety of locales every summer. He taught me it wasn’t about the shops and movie stars, but rather the community of people who love this life.”
Bringing the Hamptons Into Your Home
If you are looking for ways to bring coastal home décor into your home, Mendelson has some tips for bringing his view of the Hamptons to life.
Make it Personal.
The goal of any space should be to make it personal, as if it was made just for you. Don’t be afraid to make a room your own by doing the unexpected.
Find ways to bring your favorite aspects of the coast into your home in a way that strikes a chord with you. If your intent is to have home decor that makes you feel like you’re on a beach getaway, choose colors and pieces that speak to what your vision of that is.
Break the Rules.
He also recommends shaking up a traditional space with a few unlikely pieces.
One way he did this in his own home was to put a mirror on an exterior wall of his back porch. By doing so he reflects the beauty of the natural landscape on the outside of the house.
He also suggests mixing a modern piece into a traditional space along with incorporating a mix of different time periods to make a cohesive look that goes against the norm.
Bring the Outdoors In.
If you’re trying to capture a coastal feel in your home don’t be afraid to bring the outside in. “Blue and green are the ocean, the sky, the landscape—they’re part of our DNA,” Mendelson told HouseBeautiful. Bring colors and pieces into your home that mirror that DNA and invoke the feelings you get when you’re at the coast.
When it comes to adding coastal home décor to your home, it’s about going with what your definition of the coast is. Bringing your vision to life is what will make it a coastal space that you’ll be proud to call home.
