Mariette Himes Gomez is a veteran interior designer who attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the New York School of Interior Design and has collaborated with other industry greats throughout her career. In 1975 she opened her own design studio, Gomez Associates, and it’s still a successful design studio today. She then went on to open her own retail store, called The Shop, she created her own furnishings collection, and has authored 3 design books.
On top of everything else she has won numerous awards, including Architectural Digest’s AD100, being named one of “The World’s 20 Top Greatest Designers Of All Time”, and one of Elle Décor’s “Grand Masters of Design”.
Architectural Digest once called her the “house whisperer” because she has an innate ability to turn any space into a serene and beautiful sanctuary. Here are a few of Mariette’s key design concepts she uses when creating any of her designs:
In an interview with Architectural Digest, Mariette describes herself as a minimalist. “You shouldn’t try to include everything you ever liked in one house or apartment. The point of view gets confusing and often creates uncomfortable intersections.”
She brings subtle colors, fine classic pieces, simple yet elegant window dressings, and unique personal objects into every design. Theses elegant touches make a house feel like a home – warm and inviting – rather than busy and cluttered.
Please Your Client
She believes that first and foremost that any project needs be a reflection of the client she’s working for. They’re the ones who will will be living in that space so she feels its important to ensure that it fits their needs and style to a tee rather that going with what’s in style at the moment.
The same should go for you when when decorating your own home. Make choices that are a reflection of your own style and needs. Don’t just give into what others suggest or whatever style is being spotlighted at the moment, go with what makes you happy to be living in your space
Mariette believes that it is important to invest in quality furniture and quality art work. She always purchases quality furniture that is comfortable because comfort is a must have in any space.
These are a few key design elements Mariette incorporates into every design. Have you taken any of these elements to heart when designing your own home?
