  1. The article says laminate is 100% alergen free, but what about people who are alergic to chemicals? I read voc’s are lower in lamiate now with many being glueless, but how much safer are they than carpet or vinyl? This seems to be hard info to find, other than to aviod products from china.

Very good question, Micki! Laminates are typically manufactured by gluing together layers of wood composite. Adhesives used during the manufacturing process may contain formaldehyde and other VOCs that can trigger allergies. However, there have been HUGE strides in making laminate flooring more eco-friendly and less chemically harmful. If you’re concerned about VOC levels in your flooring, check product documentation or ask one of our salespeople for the emissions rating of the product. Here at Bestlaminate, we have been working very hard to make product certifications more accessible to our customers online as well, so you know that you are getting a quality product from us without the hassle of searching the web. Laminate floors that are CARB2 compliant or have a formaldehyde rating of E1 or E0 are generally the best choices. There is also a FloorScore rating, which a lot of companies are striving for, since it’s viewed as being even better than CARB2 compliance alone. All of our products meet these standards, and most of our products come from Europe or made here in the USA actually, so you should feel confident that you’re getting a quality product from us.

The usual reason why laminates are touted as being “allergen-free” is because the hard surface is easy to clean and does not harbor or hide dust, mold, and dander. In comparison to vinyl, high-end vinyl floors offer the same benefits of laminate and usually don’t have the same amount of VOCs since the manufacturing process is a little different. However, lower end vinyl floorings are often manufactured with VOCs, so just be careful of the product you are purchasing. Being a seasonal and pet dander sufferer myself, carpet is just a nightmare for people like us because it holds on to all of that dander, dust, dustmite, and can even harbor mold if the carpet and the padding underneath gets wet and isn’t dried properly. The fibers of the carpet itself can be made with chemicals since most carpet fibers nowadays are synthetic, so like vinyl flooring, you get what you pay for. I hope this answers your question thoroughly!

  2. Did you research the health safety of laminated floors, which have an aluminum oxide coating? I’m trying to decide, too.

    • Many manufacturers now add small chips of Aluminum Oxide directly into the floor’s finish which dramatically increases the life of the floor. The hardness of fused, crystalline aluminum oxide is second only to the diamond. Aluminum oxide is the fourth most abundant compound in the earth’s crust. We will considet this topic in one of our future articles. Thank you for a great idea!

There is a significant amount of information regarding the safe use of aluminum oxide or alumina in medical applications. Read more
