Before You Begin

Before you begin to install your laminate flooring, you will want to be sure your eyes and ears are protected. Safety should always be first. If you are not sure how to properly use any of the necessary supplies, read the instructions or give your flooring supplier a call.

Measure Before Cutting

Accurate measurements are extremely important when it comes to installing laminate flooring. Make sure you invest in a measuring tape that you can read easily. Should you make too many incorrect cuts, you may find yourself ordering more laminate flooring. Therefore, increasing the cost of your affordable project.

The dry erasable marker will become your best friend as you work through the installation process. This allows you to mark your cuts accurately, without having to worry about leaving a permanent mark on a laminate plank.

You are probably asking, “Why do I need a pail?” An old 5 gallon pail serves as a dust catcher. Cut the laminate flooring right over it. This works as a great place to collect much of the saw dust that tends to fly through the air. By utilizing a pail, you will eliminate some of this. As with any home improvement project, you will have some dust and it probably will take some time to settle down. But, as we all know, in the long run, the process itself is well worth it.

A reversed jigsaw blade and an undercut saw should provide you with the cuts that you will need. Make sure your measurements are correct, and you should have no problems when it comes to making those cuts. Most importantly, make sure you understand how to use these saws correctly, if not, read the instructions or speak with someone who knows how to use these tools properly.

A tapping block and pull bar can help when it comes to some of the tight spots you may encounter. Many laminate flooring brands come with easy locking systems which state that tapping is not needed or not even allowed. Chances are that when you get to that last piece, you will need to tap or pull. Be very careful and pay close attention to the movement of your floating laminate floor. You will also want to avoid punching a hole in the wall or damaging a laminate plank, while tapping or pulling. Most importantly, always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
