When Margaret Kirkland was named “15 under 40” by Atlanta Home’s and Lifestyle Magazine in 2014, she solidified her spot as an up and coming designer.
Kirkland is the owner of Margaret Kirkland Interiors. Before she ventured out on her own she worked for 15 years in New York and Atlanta with Dan Carithers Design Consultants. During that time, Kirkland worked on a variety of projects. From plantations and workshops to International farmhouses, Kirkland got her feet wet in the design world in many unique ways.
Her website states that “…her sense as a designer [is] that great homes are ones that are both fresh and enduring.” According to the many accolades this young designer has received, we know that she has a keen eye for interior décor.
Here are some of the favorite tips that we’ve heard from Kirkland.
Get inspired by the structure of your home.
The first place Kirkland starts on any room or home is with the structure. She looks for inspiration using the home’s architecture and natural lighting before making any changes in a room.
If you’re looking to rejuvenate your space, you can do the same. Empty your room and pull out pieces of your home’s space that you might not have noticed before. Then, accentuate them in a way that brings the space to life and gives it personality.
Use personal favorites to add unique touches.
It’s not just about the space. It’s also about your personal comfort and taste.
Kirkland incorporates her client’s favorite colors, objects, or artwork in to a space. This reflects the lifestyle and personality of each person she meets.
If you haven’t found your personal style, take a page from Kirkland’s book by looking for inspiration in something small. What’s your favorite painting? What’s your favorite color or pattern? Use that when shopping for new décor to find pieces and fixtures that will accentuate your rooms.
Upcycle old pieces of furniture or décor.
Kirkland says that, “one of her greatest pleasures as a designer is to go hunting in a client’s storage for old treasures that can be repurposed to give them new life…” Recreating old pieces of furniture or changing up old artwork can revitalize a space without costing you a fortune.
The end goal of Kirkland’s designs is to give rooms a sense of modern timelessness. She focuses on classic designs that look fresh.
