How Do I Find a Good Hardwood Flooring Installer?

Dear Bob and Betsy,
I just picked out a beautiful American Cherry hardwood floor for my living room and den. Now, I need to find someone to help me install it. Do you have any recommendations for how I can find a good hardwood flooring installer? I want this to be perfect!

Dear Reila,

Congratulations on picking out your new flooring! That’s a huge first step toward recreating the look in your home.

Hardwood flooring requires expertise to install properly. You’re smart to hire an installer that specializes in this material. Although we do not recommend specific installers, we have a few tips to help you find the perfect company for the job. Here’s what to look for when choosing your hardwood flooring installer.

BBB Accreditation

The Better Business Bureau goes through an extensive process to vet each person who receives a BBB accreditation. This makes it easier to trust contractors who hold the accreditation to do the job professionally and deliver high quality work.

Online Reviews

There are many review sites online that give you a glimpse into what other people experienced (and what you can expect) from a contractor. We encourage you to read all reviews in detail. Sometimes, a review can sneak in for the wrong company. You should also be sure to read both the positive and negative reviews to get a well-rounded glimpse into the business so you have a clearer idea of what to expect.

Talk to Your Friends

Perhaps the best recommendation you can get is from your friends. These people will be open and honest with you about their experience. You’ll hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. Spread the word that you’re in the market for a new flooring contractor and you’ll be amazed at how many recommendations you start hearing from friends, or friends of friends.

Look for Testimonials

Many contractors have testimonials on their website. These are a great opportunity to listen to past clients and hear what they experienced when working with this contractor. If there are no testimonials readily available, ask for referrals from the company you’re interested in. Bonus points if the contractor can refer you to someone who has the same type of hardwood flooring as you.

Go With Your Gut

Seek out a few bids for the project. Then, go with your gut to see whom you feel most comfortable allowing in your home to work on such a large and important project. No matter what all the review sites say, you will need to have a good feeling about the person you hire for you to sleep well at night.

  1. Hi Charlotte! Yes, we always recommend reading reviews on contractors to ensure the best results!

  2. My husband wants to install a hardwood floor in our kitchen. I like how you suggest reading the online reviews of a hardwood floor installation service to make sure they are reliable and good at their job. We will be sure to do some research on any hardwood floor contractor we consider hiring.

  3. Hi Malia, thanks for your comment! It can be hard to find a trusted installer when you are new to an area, so asking for referrals is always a great option 🙂

  4. I like your tip to ask for referrals from hardwood flooring companies if you don’t see any testimonials on their site. That would be a great way to hear from past clients on how the contractor works like you said! We just moved to this area and don’t have a lot of contacts to ask, so we will definitely try this out so we can find the best contractor to put a hardwood floor in our home. Thanks for the helpful tips!
