Laminate Underlayment Basics

Laminate underlayment is essential when installing laminate flooring

The underlayment has to be laid down over the sub-floor and once you are done with this you can lay your floor right on the underlayment. The main reasons to install laminate underlayment is to: help your floated floor to float even minor imperfections in the sub-floor absorb sound when walking on the floor add moisture protection when installing over cement sub-floor.

There are different types and thicknesses of underlayment. Type of your sub-floor plays the main role when choosing right underlayment for your floor.

Most popular underlayments are:

Regular Underlayment – most popular, thin foam padding. In most cases is 3mm=1.8” thick and comes in rolls. We sell our regular underlayment per sq.ft, and we can pre-cut custom square footage roll for every customer. This underlayment foam is good to install over wood subfloor only, because do not have a moisture barrier. If you have cement sub-floor you should consider 2-in-1 Vapor underlayment. where is possibility of moisture coming up from your sub-floor.

2-in-1 Vapor Underlayment- this product is the same as Regular Underlayment with additional layer of moisture barrier attached to it. Vapor barrier will keep moisture out of your laminate, and you should use this underlayment in places where is possibility of moisture coming up from your sub-floor.

3-in-1 Silent Underlayment – premium underlayment ideal for all floating floors such as laminate and hardwood. This underlayment provides excellent sound reduction and thermal insulation. It is easy to install; comes with attached moisture inhibiting membrane and tape on the overlaps.

6 MIl PE Vapor Barrier Film- used for laminate flooring that has already pre-attached underlayment.
